dicke Luft

YESTERDAY was the ninth straight day local air quality standards have been poor, the longest stretch of air pollution in Shanghai in four years, according to the Shanghai Environment Monitoring Center.

The center is forecasting more bad air today and tomorrow, although it hopes rain will clear up the problem in the next few days.

The Air Pollution Index hit 118 yesterday, slightly above the 100 threshold for good air. The highest pollution index over the past eight days was nearly 160, according to the center.

"The problem is due to pollutants travelling all the way from the north, which have added to local pollution," said Wei Haiping, the center's deputy chief engineer.

Wei said a weak cold air mass controlling local weather has failed to drive the pollutants out of the city. The center is hoping a strong cold air mass or some rain will improve the situation tomorrow.

The pollutants are mainly caused by coal burned by power and chemical plants and some small boilers, as well as vehicle exhaust.

Air quality has been worse at night and early in the morning than in the middle of the day, Wei said, suggesting that people shouldn't go jogging or exercise outdoors in the morning until the situation improves.

Air pollution has been a problem in big cities all along the eastern coast over the past few days, the center said.
